I'm loving Ellen Fox's tweeted review: "Last Airbender: Oodles of mystical-sounding exposition delivered by bad young actors.Tibetan kitsch. Grandiose music to take a dump to."
(No, as I took one look at the effects and could just see the badness. The thing is, you can do a darkly shot action/fantasy/wuxia film and still have it at least look good. I have no doubt the Pang Brothers' Storm Warriors cost just as much as TLA, but it manages to at least look gorgeous.)
I hate to say it, but if that's they style they wanted, they should have just gone to Hong Kong and hired someone. Due to the sheer mass of wuxia films that come out every year, the HK film scene is full of folks who can direct action well while still managing a full emotional range.
You might not get the best, but you'd get someone with stronger chops than M. Night, whose attitude is best captured by Medium Large.

(I predicted this badness! Not a feat of great skill, admittedly.)

It's funny, because I watched the youtube trailer w/ the sound off, and even that way is manifestly the superior film.
